- Facial nerve paralysis that involves palpebral reflex loss
- Surgically removed third eyelid gland
- Metabolic disease
- Canine distemper
- Sulfonamide usage
- Congenital alacrima
- Pre-existing fungal or viral ocular infection
- Breeding dogs
- Pregnant dogs
