Description

HEARTGARD® Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) is a monthly chewable given to your dog that’s formulated to kill heartworms as well as help treat and control hookworms. An infected mosquito that bites your dog can potentially lead to permanent damage in less than three months. That’s why it’s important to keep your dog on a monthly heartworm preventative year-round. Before treating your dog, make sure they have a current annual heartworm test result on file with your vet. HEARTGARD Plus is safe to use in all dogs aged 6 weeks and older regardless of weight. Regular dosing is recommended by the American Heartworm Society as an easy way to protect your dog throughout the year. Don’t forget, it’s important to talk to your veterinarian about any other drugs your pet is taking before starting HEARTGARD Plus. How can I store Heartgard Plus Chewables For Dogs?

Your dog should be tested to see if they have an existing heartworm infection prior to administering Heartgard Plus. This heartworm treatment is not effective against adult heartworms. If your dog is infected, they must be treated to get rid of adult heartworms and microfilariae before giving them Heartgard Plus.

While the Ivermectin in Heartgard is not effective for microfilariae clearance, it may kill some of the microfilariae. Your dog may have a mild reaction, most likely because of dying or dead microfilariae, such as transient diarrhea.

Ivermectin studies indicate that certain Collie breeds have a sensitivity to Ivermectin at elevated dose levels that are over 16 times the recommended dose than other breeds. At elevated doses, sensitive dogs showed adverse reactions, which included dilated pupils, uncoordinated movements, depression, tremors, drooling, muscle weakness, excitability, inability to stand, stupor, coma, and in some cases, death. Heartgard did not demonstrate signs of toxicity when used at 10 times the recommended dosage in sensitive Collies.

Heartgard Plus has demonstrated a wide safety margin at the recommended dosage in dogs, including breeding or pregnant females, stud dogs, and puppies 6 weeks or older. When used as recommended, Heartgard is safe. If you have any questions, contact your veterinarian to discuss your concerns.

Helpful Tips:

Remember to not only eliminate fleas from your dog, but to treat other animals in the house as well as treat areas such as carpets and yards for flea infestations.
It's advised to not feed your dog rodents or uncooked meat or fish.
To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.

The majority of dogs enjoy the tasty Heartgard Plus chew and will take it readily like a treat. The chewable should be given in a way that encourages your dog to chew and not swallow it whole. If your dog tends to swallow their treats without chewing, you can break the chewable up into pieces. Carefully monitor your dog to make sure they get the entire dose and observe them for a few more minutes to make sure they do not drop or spit out any part of it. If your dog does not eat the entire chew, administer another full does as soon as you can.

If your dog misses a dose and more than 30 days have passed since their last dose, give Heartgard Plus as soon as possible and restart the monthly dosing schedule from that date. Let your veterinarian know that your dog missed a dose.
